An inquest into his death is due to open tomorrow in Woking, Surrey.

A post-mortem examination was carried out after Graham was pronounced dead at the scene following the horror.

British Transport Police reported his death to the coroner’s office.

The heartbreaking new details come after Graham’s wife Amanda revealed today that the former England captain took his own life.

The father of four was seriously ill in hospital in May 2022 after trying to kill himself.

Graham recovered but tragically took his own life near his home in Surrey, Amanda told The Times.

She added: “Despite the fact that he had a wife and two daughters who he loved and who loved him, he was not getting better.

“He had been so unwell recently and he really believed we would be better off without him.”

She added: “We are devastated that he acted on it and took his own life.”

Amanda said Graham had suffered from major depression and anxiety for “several years”.

His daughters Kitty (22) and Emma (19) paid tribute to their dad by revealing their favorite memories.

Kitty said: “He would get up and dance anywhere to anything – he wasn’t the best dancer but he never cared.”

While Emma added: “He was so humble. I didn’t really realize how good he was until I read all the accolades over the past few days.

“If someone had asked him what he was doing, he would have said he dunked the ball a little.”

Thorpe made his international debut in 1993 and scored a century on his first Ashes appearance, becoming the first England player to do so in 20 years.

He was a regular for England and played 100 Tests, scored 16 centuries and played 82 times for the ODI side, and also enjoyed a 17-year career with Surrey.

His last Test appearance came in June 2005 before he was left out of that summer’s victorious Ashes series and his international career was ruled out.

In a statement, the England and Wales Cricket Board said: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Graham Thorpe, MBE, has passed away.

“There seem to be no adequate words to describe the profound shock we feel at Graham’s death.

“More than one of England’s greatest ever batsmen, he was a beloved member of the cricket family and adored by fans around the world.

“His skill was unquestionable and his ability and achievements during a 13-year international career brought so much happiness to his England and Surrey CCC teammates and supporters.

“Later, as a coach, he guided England’s best talent to incredible victories in all forms of the game.

“The cricketing world is in mourning today. Our hearts go out to his wife Amanda, his children, father Geoff and all his family and friends at this unimaginably difficult time.
