A show source revealed: “The baker was gutted to miss the second day but they weren’t up for it and had to sit out.”

The first episode brings another fresh twist as the bakers are told about a new challenge.

They will be asked to replicate baking from scratch – and without a recipe to guide them.

Alison reveals: “Each week the bakers will face a different secret gingham-clad challenge, but this time they’re in for an extra surprise.”

Her co-host Noel Fielding continues: “This is a taste and baking challenge.

“You have five minutes to inspect your cake and then you have to make it again without a recipe.”

Among the new bakers hoping for the Hollywood handshake are farmer Mike, 29, from Wiltshire and menswear designer Christiaan, 33, from London.

Paul gives the Hollywood handshake in the first challenge of the new series.

The series begins with Cake Week, which proved to be the real father for a new group of bakers.

After the initial signature challenge comes the technical challenge of baking Battenberg cakes without a recipe.

Bake Off returns tonight at 8pm on Channel 4.
