Greedy son and wife jailed after fleecing parents of £117,000 — leaving them with 28p

A GREEDY son and his wife who stole their parents’ £117,000 savings have been jailed.

Gary Mansell, 61, and partner Diane, 58, used them as cash cows from 2017 to 2020 after they were granted power of attorney.

The couple left elderly Fred and Enid Mansell with 28p and living on takeaways while splurging on a £25,000 kitchen, eternity ring, cosmetic dental work and handbags.

They also went on lavish holidays – including a £7,900 14-day holiday in Jamaica and a £4,000 holiday in Cape Verde.

The Mansells did this by selling the pensioner’s £255,000 home for less than around £100,000 by moving it privately so they could come up with the money.

They also encouraged an elderly couple to move into their home and gave them power of attorney.

Charlotte Atherton, prosecuting, told Liverpool Crown Court: “Fred believed that his son and wife would look after him and Enid so that they would not have to go into a nursing home in their old age.”

But instead, the elderly couple laundered the money from their only son – Gary.

Judge David Swinnerton told the court: “You were both of good character but this is the most vile display of greed, vanity and selfishness to allow you to live a lifestyle far beyond your means.”

Mansell, from Woolton, Merseyside, was a £95,000-a-year boss at Jaguar Land Rover.

His wife ran a curtain company until she went bankrupt.

They lived a comfortable life in a luxury suburb but had always dreamed of being millionaires, the court heard.

The judge told the court: “For many people that would be a decent income to live a good life on, but it doesn’t seem to be enough for you and Diane.”

They were convicted last month of fraud by abuse of position and money laundering.

Gary and Diane Mansell were convicted of fraud by abuse of position and money laundering after a trial last month.

Jailing them for six years, Judge Swinnerton said: “This is the most disgusting display of greed, vanity and selfishness.

“You showed them very little care, they were a cash cow for you that allowed you to live that lifestyle.

“You had a position of responsibility, power and trust – and you grossly violated all of that.”

Mansell didn’t respond when told he was going to be locked up, but he and Diane began to cry after he blew her a kiss over the video link screen.

Enid passed away last December and Fred now lives in a nursing home.

He described the last few months of his wife’s life as “terrible and traumatic”.
