Two rape convictions
In 2002, Gurmeet Ram Rahim was accused of sexual assault by two female disciples. One of the victims contacted the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee through a letter claiming that Ram Rahim had sexually abused his female disciple in Dera. The letter triggered a CBI investigation and the Punjab and Haryana High Court asked the Sirsa district and session judges to provide a detailed report on the allegations. The case assumed significance in 2014 when Ram Rahim claimed that he had been impotent since 1990. His claim was rejected by the CBI special court. In 2017, after a 15-year legal battle, Ram Rahim was found guilty of two counts of rape by a special CBI court in Panchkula, Haryana and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Journalist Ram Chand Chhatrapati murdered
Ram Chander Chhatrapati was the first journalist to publish an anonymous letter accusing Ram Rahim of rape in 2002. On October 24, 2002, Chhatrapati was raped outside his residence in Sirsa by two men named Nirmal Singh and Kuldeep Singh. A local carpenter was shot at close range. On January 11, 2019, Ram Rahim was found guilty of murder. On January 17, 2019, he was sentenced to life imprisonment by a special CBI court. Deira manager Ranjit Singh murdered
In 2002, Ranjit Singh, a former Dera manager, was murdered in a field near his village in Kurukshetra district. He is the sibling of the woman who anonymously accused Ram Rahim of sexual assault in a letter to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Nearly two decades later, on October 18, 2021, a special CBI court in Panchkula sentenced Ram Rahim and four others to life imprisonment for their involvement in Singh’s murder.
