A FORMER gynecologist has been accused of raping 87 women in his practice and filming the attacks for 20 years in a sex abuse scandal that has rocked Norway.
Arne Bye, 55, is on trial on serious charges of sexual abuse – including against two children who were aged 14 and 15 at the time of the alleged attacks.

The oldest woman was 67 years old when Bye allegedly raped her.
He pleaded guilty to three counts of rape and 35 cases of abuse of position – he faces up to 21 years behind bars.
During the investigation, police officers seized more than 6,000 hours of footage, including his gynecological examinations.
They were allegedly carried out on patients without their knowledge, in what officials described as “sensitive and detailed”.
Bye allegedly inserted a “deodorant-like”, “bottle-like” and cylindrical object into the women – with no medical reason for doing so.
One woman, addressing the court in Trøndelag, said: “I thought I was going to die.”
Another unnamed woman said she went to her GP’s surgery with a sore throat – before having one of the invasive tests.
She told how she ended up in her underwear on the bench with the words: “I thought he was my doctor, so I did as he said.”
The indictment against Bya said the alleged assaults “occurred quickly and unexpectedly” during the examination.
They took place in Frosta, a small town of only 2,600 inhabitants on the Norwegian coast.
The court saw the graphic video taken by Bye – with Crown attorney Richard Haugen Lyng saying: “‘We have video footage of the attack itself.
“In this sense, we have a very special evidentiary situation in the case, insofar as large parts of the indictment are illustrated with video material,” says the prosecutor.
The former doctor claimed in court that he kept the appointments down for fear of lawsuits – and said he never looked at them.
Norway’s NRK broadcaster said one of the clips shows him setting up several cameras in a room before examining one of the women named in the case.
The media also reported that he partially admitted to the rape charges in court on Wednesday.
Concerns were raised about him back in 2006 – by another doctor at the gynecology department of a local hospital.
One of Bye’s patients, who was there for further treatment, said that the doctor massaged her genitals during the examination.
Police launched an investigation in August 2022 after health authorities alerted them to the possible behaviour.
Bye was able to keep his job until the following year when charges were filed.
He was not remanded in custody during the trial.
