Hafthor Bjornsson started his sports career as a basketball player. He was 2.06 m (6 ft 9 in) tall when he began his senior team career in 2004 with Division I club Breiablik. He was a center for this team. In 2005, he joined FSu Selfoss, which competed in the Icelandic Division I. After ten games, Hafthor revealed that he was playing with a broken bone in his ankle, which required surgery.
In 2006, Hafór moved to rvalsdeild powerhouse KR after recovering from surgery. He missed most of the 2006-2007 season. due to another surgery to repair a broken ankle screw. Hafthor returned to the FSu Selfoss team for the 2007-2008 season.
