Halyna Hutchins is a Ukrainian cinematographer who has shot American films. On October 21, 2021, during the filming of the Hollywood movie “Rust”, American actor Alec Baldwin opened fire with a prop gun, injuring film director Joel Suzi and killing Halena Hutchins.

Halyna Hutchins was born in 1979 in Gorodets, Zhitomir, Ukraine (age 42 years old at the time of death). She grew up on a Soviet military base in the Arctic Circle. She graduated in International Journalism from Taras Shevchenko National University in Kyiv, Ukraine. In 2015, she attended the American Film Institute (AFI) Conservatory of Music and received a Master’s Degree (MFA) in Cinematography.

Profession

She began her career working as an investigative reporter in British documentary productions in Europe. After being inspired by the work of famous Australian and Hong Kong cinematographer Christopher Doyle and Soviet cinematographer Sergey Urusevskiy. Helena decided to pursue a career in film production. She then moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a cinematographer. Initially, she worked as a production assistant and electrician on various short films. American cinematographer Robert Primus recommended her to study filmmaking at the American Film Institute (AFI) Conservatory. During her graduation at AFI, she worked on the thesis topic “Hidden”, which was screened at the International Film Festival of Cinematographic Art “Camerimage”. She then worked as a Director of Photography for the International Association of Cinematographers (IATSE Local 600) in Los Angeles, California. She then joined the Society of Creative Artists in New York as Director of Photography. Halyna Hutchins has worked as a cinematographer on Hollywood films such as Darin (2019), Enemy (2020) and Blind Fire (2020).

She also worked as a cinematographer on the BET+ original series A Luv Tale: The Series (2019). In 2021, she filmed the British film “Rust”, which was also her last film.

On October 21, 2021, during the filming of the English film “Rust” in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the United States, she was shot by a prop gun fired by American actor Alec Baldwin. American film director Joel Souza was seriously injured and shot Injuried. Helena and Joel were immediately taken to hospital.
