British billionaire Hamish Harding is one of five people aboard the missing tourist submarine that was used to take visitors to the Titanic disaster.
According to Sky News, French submarine pilot Paul-Henry Nargeolet and OceanGate Expeditions founder and CEO Stockton Rush are also on the Titan.
The family has confirmed that British billionaire Hamish Harding was on the missing Titanic submarine.
“Thoughts and prayers for my stepfather Hamish Harding as his submarine went missing while exploring the Titanic,” Brian Szasz, Harding’s stepson, wrote on Facebook. A search and rescue operation is underway.
One of OceanGate Excursions’ submarines went missing in the Atlantic Ocean, the company claims, and the search is still ongoing. OceanGate Expeditions provides vehicles for deep sea excursions.
Five people are aboard the 21-foot-long yacht, according to the US Coast Guard, which also warned the search operation was “challenging” due to the isolated location. It now takes place about 900 miles east of Cape Cod.
The isolated location makes it difficult to search, but Coast Guard District 1 Commander Rear Admiral John Mauger added: “We are deploying all available resources.”
He assured that during the search both the surface and the subsoil are examined. About an hour and a half after the research vessel Polar Prince submerged Sunday morning, Titan lost communication with it, according to the Coast Guard.
The main difference between a submarine and a submarine is that the former requires a mother ship to deploy and retrieve it, while the latter is capable of leaving and returning to port on its own. In a statement, OceanGate said it was “exploring and mobilizing all options” to get the crew home safely.
The Titanic, currently 12,500 feet (3,800 m) underwater in the Atlantic, died in 1912 after colliding with an iceberg.
Harding, president of the aircraft sales and operations company Action Aircraft, claimed on Twitter on Sunday that the millionaire had participated in the Titanic expedition. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FDCO) said: “We are in contact with the family of a British man following reports of a missing submarine off the North American coast.”
OceanGate claims that the Titan submarine has 96 hours of “life support” and can submerge 13,120 feet “with a comfortable margin of safety.” To reach the wreck, you must descend 12,500 feet in about two hours.
