Hans Raj Hans was an Indian singer and politician. He is famous for singing Punjabi folklore and Sufi songs. Hans is the fourth Padma Shri recipient of the Republic of India’s highest civilian award.

Hans Raj Hans was born on April 9, 1962 in Shafipur village, Jalandhar, Punjab (age 57 in 2019). He was born into a peasant family. His zodiac sign is Aries. Hans graduated from DAV Academy, Jalandhar. He has loved singing since he was a child. Hans drew inspiration for singing from a street singer who used to come to the village early in the morning to sing devotional songs. He received formal singing training from Ustad Puran Shahkoti Sahib. His singing career started in the countryside and gradually moved to the city.

singing career

Hans started his singing career in 1983 with the album “Jogian Da Kanna Vich”. His first song was “Shahied-E-Azam Bhagat Singh Di Ghori”. He subsequently released many Punjabi folk, devotional and Sufi songs. Hans later worked with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in the film Kachche Dhaage. His famous music albums include Chorni, Jhanjhar, Mohabbat and Ishqe Di Barsaat. Hans is popular for his hit songs “Dil Tote Tote Ho Gaya”, “Nachi Jo Sade Naal”, “Dil Chori Sada Ho Gaya”, “Sili Sili Hawa” and “Nit Khair Manga”. He has lent his voice to Bollywood songs including Khaali Dil Nahin Jaan Bhi Hai, Punjabiyaan Di Shaan and Aaja Nachle. He also worked briefly as an actor in the Punjabi film “MEHANDI SHAGNA DI”. Hans was appointed professor emeritus of music at San Jose State University and Washington, D.C. University.

political career

In January 2009, he joined the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) party and contested the Lok Sabha elections from Jalandhar constituency. He quit the party in December 2014 and later joined the Indian National Congress in February 2016.

On December 10, 2016, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and represented the party in the 2019 North West Delhi Lok Sabha elections, replacing Udit Raj. He defeated Aam Aad by more than 600,000 votes. Gugan Singh of the Aam Aadmi Party.

  • In 2002, Hans Raj Hans, while addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, accused Bhushan Kumar, the owner of T-series cassettes, of threatening him through the underworld. Hans claims bosses are trying to end his career as a singer and denies breaching any of Kumar’s alleged contracts with the company.
  • In 2014, Pakistani media claimed that Hans Raj Hans converted to Islam during a visit to Pakistan. Later, his son Navraj Hans refuted such reports, saying that his father had not been to Pakistan and was, in fact, unwell and resting in his hometown of Jalandhar.
