Happy Valley stars reunite for new ITV thriller – and it sounds brilliant

Happy Valley may have ended its third series earlier this year, but the two stars of the BBC crime drama have reunited for a brand new thriller series coming to ITV.

Siobhan Finneran, who played Clare Cartwright, the sister of Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire), has joined the cast of upcoming drama Protection, alongside co-stars Happy valley alum Katherine Kelly.

Katherine appeared in the second series of the hard-hitting drama as Inspector Jodie Shackleton, the lead investigator investigating the murder of Vicky Fleming. Siobhan meanwhile appeared in all three series Happy valley as Catherine’s sister, a recovering addict who helps care for Catherine’s son, Ryan, after his mother’s death.

Protection will see Siobhan take the lead as Detective Inspector Liz Nyles who finds herself investigating a major security breach occurring within the witness protection programme.

According to the synopsis, Liz is “personally compromised by an affair with a colleague, but determined to fight back and uncover the true source of corruption within her unit, to redeem herself, her lover’s reputation and protect her witnesses. Even if they don’t always deserve it.”

The synopsis continues: “Bleeding through the morally gray, undercover world of witness protection, Liz’s mission to find the truth will take her deep into the heart of the criminal underworld and beyond as she becomes increasingly torn between caring for her family, her loyalty to her lover and her duty as a police officer. This is the story of a smart, strong policewoman, out of her depth in a world where nothing is what it seems.”

Recording for Protection has officially started in Liverpool and will come to ITV and ITVX in 2024. The cast also features Barry Ward (Bad sisters), Chaneil Kular (Sexual education), David Hayman (Sid and Nancy), Nichola Burley (Gold) and Akiya Henry (Silent witness).

Far from his role in Protection and Happy valleyKatherine Kelly is a recognizable face on our screens, and the actress currently stars in ITV’s brilliant new drama, The Long Shadow, about the hunt for notorious serial killer Peter Sutcliffe.

Told from the perspective of the police officers and the victims, the series details the harrowing five-year search for the killer, who took the lives of 13 women and tried to kill seven more.

In the meantime, Happy valley saw success at the recent National Television Awards when the drama series and its lead star Sarah Lancashire picked up wins in the Best Drama and Best Actress categories.

Taking to the stage to accept her win, Sarah paid tribute to her colleague Siobhan in her speech. She said: “Thank you so much for this. I loved every scene, every moment Happy valley. And I know I’ll never forget that, nor the brilliant people I worked with, the way the BBC supported us.”

She continued: “To James Norton, Siobhan Finneran who was my partner in crime for three years and is an amazing actress.” She ended by saying, “My family walks with me every step of the way and I’m incredibly lucky to have them in my life.”
