Zachary Levi brings the iconic character from children’s books to life.
PEOPLE has the exclusive first trailer for Harold and the purple crayonin which he acts Shazam an actor as the title character whose drawings become real thanks to a magic crayon. The picture book was first published in 1955 and was written by Crockett Johnson.
“What was the most fun was getting to fully commit to playing a character with that level of optimism and imagination oozing out of his pores,” Levi, 43, tells PEOPLE. “Harold is nothing but light. And I love that.”
The cast also includes Lil Rel Howery, Benjamin Bottani, Jemaine Clement, Tanya Reynolds, Alfred Molina and Zooey Deschanel. It was directed by Carlos Saldanha (Ice Age, Rio).

Levi says, “The best thing about any cast and crew is the organic, genuine moments of human interaction you have throughout the day. Especially the spontaneous parties of singing and dancing while the music flows.”
Deschanel, 44, says: “I loved working with everyone so much. It was so great.”

About the story, the actress adds: “It is one of my favorite children’s books. I have read it to my children so many times, I was very enchanted by this adaptation and the way they brought the characters to life.”
