‘Harold & Kumar’ Stars Kal Penn and John Cho Reunite at SAG Rally: ‘We Got the Munchies for a Fair Deal!’

On Wednesday, Kal Penn, 46, and John Cho, 51 – who co-starred in the film Harold & Kumar comedy film trilogy — reunited at the SAG-AFTRA strike site outside the Paramount Pictures studio lot in Los Angeles.

“We’ve got the munchies for a fair deal,” Penn wrote in a post he shared on his Instagram page, referring to their cult classic film comedies.

The actor and former Obama administration White House staffer also shared a video of himself and Cho talking to a crowd of high-profile actors gathered outside Paramount’s studios, during which he opined that SAG got the upper hand two months after the union initially called the strike.

“We have studio executives and major corporations who like to tweet about equity. They love to post on social media about fairness,” Penn said in a recording released by the Associated Press. “They love all the performative s— that comes with pretending to support us.”

“Yeah boy!” Cho added, causing Penn, Cho and the audience to laugh. “I missed LA so much,” Penn said.

Penn and Cho joined SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher, who was recently re-elected as the union’s head, at a rally Wednesday outside Paramount Stadium, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The couple said THR that they do not intend to speak to those gathered at the protests until they are asked to join the crowd.

“We were just in the back, here to support and they asked, ‘Do you want to go up,'” Penn told the newspaper.

“It was like a scene from one of our cut-scenes,” added Cho.

Penn and Cho starred in three Harold & Kumar movies, starting in 2004 Harold and Kumar go to the White Castle and the last time in 2011 A real Harold and Kumar Christmas. The films were distributed by New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures — the two major Hollywood studios against which SAG is currently on strike.

Back in 2021, Cho suggested that ua GQ video interview that while there is interest in making another Harold & Kumar film, there was some confusion among the creative team about how to pull off the kind of comedy seen in the first three films of the series.

“This is a really stupid answer, but we had a lot of political jokes and racial jokes, and I don’t know what the movie can do now,” he said at the time. “I don’t know how to navigate that. We’re thinking about it, but it’s a much more complicated undertaking than it was five years ago.”
