Haywood Highsmith Career
One of several undrafted players for the Miami Heat is Haywood Highsmith. Highsmith joined the Heat’s rotation regularly this year but has played sparingly in the postseason.
The 26-year-old forward signed a 10-day deal with the Miami Heat two months into the 2021–22 campaign. He returned to the NBA G League with the Delaware Blue Coats after not being offered a new deal. Two months later, the Heat called once more, and he agreed to two 10-day contracts.
The Heat rewarded him after his strong performance by turning his deal into a conventional contract. He later agreed to a three-year, $3,945,742 contract with a $1,902,137 team option.
Haywood Highsmith was the 13th-highest paid player for the Miami Heat this season with a yearly salary of $1,752,638. The NBA’s 422nd highest paid player this year is Highsmith.
This season, the Heat’s Wheeling product started 11 of the team’s 54 games. In 17.9 minutes per game, he contributed 4.4 points and 3.5 rebounds on average. The Heat will have until July 15 to make a guaranteed agreement if they choose to bring him back for the following season.
Haywood Highsmith was an unknown high school athlete for Baltimore’s Archbishop Curley. Highsmith chose to play for the Wheeling, a Division II team in West Virginia, because he did not receive any offers from Division I institutions.
Highsmith declared for the 2018 NBA draught after four seasons with the Jesuit Cardinals. He was not selected, though, and later agreed to play for the NBA G League’s Delaware Blue Coats. That 2018–19 season, the Philadelphia 76ers approached him and offered him a two-way contract.
Highsmith scored three points in five minutes to make his NBA debut in a 132-115 victory over the Washington Wizards. He ultimately played five times with the Sixers before concluding the season with the Blue Coats.
The native of Baltimore played for the Blue Coats for the bulk of his career, with the exception of a brief overseas spell with the Crailsheim Merlins in Germany. At the beginning of the 2021–22 season, after a second spell with the Blue Coats, the Miami Heat signed him to a 10-day contract.
