Heide Simonis News
This week in Kiel, Heide Simonis, the first woman to serve as prime minister of a German state, passed away at the age of 80. From 1993 through 2005, Schleswig-Holstein was governed by social democrats.
Heide Simonis, Schleswig-Holstein’s first female prime minister, has passed away. Wednesday saw the release of this information to the media by SPD state head Serpil Midyatli. On July Fourth, Simonis turned 80 years old. There was no further information provided when she passed away in her Kiel home.
From 1993 through 2005, the social democrat Simonis served as the premier of the most northern German state. Additionally, she was the first woman to serve as prime minister.

Her political career’s conclusion also generated some controversy. The coalition she forged with the SPD, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, and the Danish party SSW only had a slim majority after the state elections in 2005. The number of votes necessary for her reelection did not occur in the March 17 prime ministerial election since at least one coalition member did not support her on each of the four ballots. Who refused to give Simonis the vote is still a mystery today. Simonis withdrew from the race after the tie with the CDU candidate, Peter-Harry Carstensen, and remained the same after the fourth ballot.
After his parliamentary career came to an end, Simonis continued to serve as chair of the German branch of the children’s charity UNICEF until 2008, at which point he completely quit politics. She continued to participate in the Schleswig-Holstein Singers’ Association from 2011 to 2015, and she occasionally appeared in the media or at award ceremonies.
