He began his career in the hit Bollywood film Tarzan (1985), in which he played the role of Tarzan.
He has appeared in many Hindi films such as Tahkhana (1986), Veerana (1988), Commando (1988), Kabrastan (1988), Maar Dhaad (1988), Sindoor Aur Bandook” (1989), “Chandaal” (1998), “Kaun Kare Kurbanie” (1991) and “Garv: Pride and Honor” (2005). He has also appeared in some Malayalam and Telugu films.

- In 1985, B Subhash, the director of the Bollywood film Tarzan, was looking for an A-list actor to play the role of Tarzan in his film. He spotted Hemant, who was working as a security guard at the time, and B Subhash immediately decided to cast him as Tarzan.
- He was probably the first actor to shoot intimate scenes in Hindi films in the 1980s.
- During the first three months of his portrayal of Tarzan in the Bollywood film Tarzan (1985), he was extremely shy.
- He gained huge popularity with his debut film, but he could not get good movies and acted in several B-level movies.
