Hero cop, 46, dies after being hit by train while trying to save ‘distressed’ man on track as tributes pour in

A HERO policeman who was hit by a train while attempting to save a man on the tracks has died.

Sergeant Graham Saville had been called to assist a “distressed” individual in Nottinghamshire at around 7pm on Thursday.

During the incident in Balderton, near Newark Northgate Station, he was struck by a train.

Colleagues rushed to his aid, providing immediate medical assistance as they waited for an ambulance.

The 46-year-old was later rushed to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham in a serious condition.

But despite the efforts of medical staff, Graham tragically died on Tuesday afternoon with his family by his side.

Another man, 29, who suffered non life-threatening electrocution injuries, remains in hospital.

Paying tribute, Chief Constable Kate Meynell said “hugely respected and popular” Graham died in the line of duty and his service will never be forgotten.

She added: “Today is a day of mourning for the entire police family.

“Our hearts and deepest condolences go out to his family and we will do everything we can to support them through this unimaginably devastating time.

“It is impossible to put into words how devastating this news is for everyone who loved and respected Graham.”

Chief Constable Meynall added it was “testament to his bravery and dedication” that Graham was fatally injured while attempting to save another man’s life.

Flags across the Nottinghamshire Police force will be flown at half-mast as a mark of respect.

Assistant Chief Constable Allan Gregory, of British Transport Police said: “This is truly devastating news.

“And on behalf of everyone at British Transport Police I’d like to offer sincere and heartfelt condolences to Sergeant Saville’s family, and to our colleagues at Nottinghamshire Police.”

Local MP for Sherwood, Conservative Mark Spencer, paid tribute to Graham: “My thoughts are with friends and family of the Notts Police officer who has lost his life whilst trying to help others.

British Transport Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
