Hijam Irabot was born on September 30, 1896 in the state of Manipur, in northeastern India, India. Irabot was 55 years old at the time of his death. Hijam was closed in 1939, for supporting the 2nd Nupi Lan (2 demonstrations led by women in Manipur).
Irabot studied in Johnstone Higher Secondary School, Imphal, Manipur till 7th standard. In 1913 he went to Dhaka, Bangladesh with his cousin, Sawaijam Somorendro. In Dhaka, he was admitted to Pugoj High School to study up to the 9th grade, and in 1915 he dropped out due to lack of funds.
Irabot wrote diaries, poetry and plays in which he also acted. Irabot was also an athlete. Irabot served in the 4th session of the Nikhil Manipuri Mahasabha, where he showed leadership in the fight against social injustices during the 2nd Nupi Lan.
In the June/July 1948 elections to the Manipur Assembly, Hijam won the Utlou constituency.
