In May 2023, Duff appeared on Lipstick on the rim podcast, where she spoke candidly about the priority of her family.
“I’m obsessed with my kids. I really enjoy watching them grow up and being with them,” she said. “I always get a little annoyed when I finish a project and someone says, ‘What’s next?’ The next thing is I’m going to go be part of my family. I want to pack all the bags and lunches. That’s very important to me.”
A month later, she described parenthood Form as “freaking hard” and “endlessly rewarding”.
Duff added: “I’m in the process of having a family. I built this and I wanted this and so I have to be here to enjoy the joy and the pain and everything in between.”

Duff and Comrie welcomed their son, Luca Cruz, on March 20, 2012. “Welcome to the world Luca Cruz Comrie! Tuesday night, we became the proud parents of a healthy beautiful baby boy weighing 7 pounds 6 ounces,” Duff tweeted. “We are overjoyed and feel like the luckiest parents in the world. He is surrounded by so much love!!”
The Lizzie McGuire the star was then only 24 years old. She later spoke about the challenges of being a young mom during an appearance on The Motherly Podcastadmitting that the experience was “isolating” because none of her friends had welcomed children yet.
“I felt like after I got him, I lost a big part of my identity for maybe the first year and a half,” Duff explained. “I put it as a positive thing because I was sitting in it while it was happening maybe a little sad about it and I didn’t feel like I had anyone to go through that experience with, but then I came out the other side of the page. I’m a freaking super woman and I can do anything and I have confidence for days.”
Although Duff and Comrie divorced in 2016, Duff said she’s “really proud” of their co-parenting dynamic. “We are a unit and we will be a unit for the rest of our lives,” she told PEOPLE. “We understood [as a couple] we were not where we were. But I feel so lucky that it happened when Luca was young because it’s normal for him now.”

Duffin’s husband Koma also took a role in Luca’s life. In its cover for 2020 Parents Duff revealed that Luca had written a poem about their blended family and read it aloud at her and Koma’s wedding.
“He wrote something really beautiful,” Duff said, “and it started with, ‘Our family is a galaxy bursting out of the cosmos.’ He was so brave that he stood up and spoke into the microphone.”
On Luca’s 10th birthday, Duff posted a sweet tribute to “the best kid in the world.”
“Luca Cruz, what a gift you are to all who know you. I can’t imagine how it has been 10 years since I first held you in my arms and met your big blue eyes,” she wrote. “This time with you has been something I can’t even explain. It’s been a pleasure watching you grow. Knowing your heart and being loved by you. You are magic and I can’t wait to see all the great things you do and teach me for the next 10 years .”
A few weeks before, the mother-son duo attended a Justin Bieber concert together. Alongside videos of the pair lip-syncing Bieber’s “Sorry” and “Baby”, Duff wrote: “The best. Time. @justinbieber I think this is the last year Luca will get it out of me so I sang soooo loud.”
In February 2023, Duff discussed motherhood on Good guys podcast with fellow actor Josh Peck.
“I was a teenage mother,” she joked, talking about welcoming Luca at the age of 24. “I think I was just really ready. I always wanted to be a young parent.”
Duff added: “It was hard because I didn’t have any friends who had kids yet. But I just got it and I loved it. I love being a mom so much. I wouldn’t change it at all.”

Despite the 6-year age difference, Banks and her older brother Luca have a sweet relationship and he is very protective of her. “It’s the best,” Duff told PureWow of the relationship between the two siblings. “Sometimes it’s a chemistry between siblings where he knows he has to protect her.” She added: “He doesn’t want her to ever fall off the couch.”
In January 2020, Duff shared a black and white photo of Luca kissing Banks on the cheek. “I don’t know why he likes her so much…she stalks and harasses him every minute of the day,” she jokingly wrote in the caption.

“My love, my sweet sweet girl angel. For his post, Koma wrote: “The greatest privilege of my life is to be your dad.”
Banks is also a big fan of her mother’s music. In an interview with CosmopolitanDuff revealed that her then 3-year-old daughter loved listening to her album Breathe in. Exhale — especially her hit “Sparks.”
“I can’t get away from it because someone exposed my three-year-olds to it,” Duff joked. “We get in the car and I have to listen to my own music because my daughter is screaming, ‘I want ‘parks, I want ‘parks.'”
Another singer that Banks likes is Harry Styles. For her fourth birthday, she received a sequined pillow with the image of a British pop star as a gift from her grandmother. “My mother wins the best gift!” Duff wrote alongside a photo of Banks engrossed in her gift.
Duff also took the birthday girl to one of Styles’ concerts to celebrate. Koma shared an adorable video of Banks showing her in pure awe as she watched Styles perform.
“Harry’s 4th birthday Banks Bair. May you always sing with the most engaged and concerned look on your face,” he captioned the clip. “Loving you more than you will grow up to love Dawes.”

Before her delivery, Duff spoke to PEOPLE about how much more relaxed she felt about the pregnancy compared to her other two.
“I’m making this pregnancy easier because there was a lot of fear with bringing a new baby home when Luca was already 6½,” she said. “There’s a reassurance that we know what we need with a newborn in the house because we’ve kind of been there with Banks. Both kids are super excited about the new baby and that’s a comfort I didn’t have the first time around.”
