Hillary Clinton Gets Standing Ovation as She Presents at 2024 Tony Awards: I Know 'How Hard It Is to Make Change'

Hillary Clinton points out the historical importance behind the musical Sufs.

Clinton, 76, appeared at the 2024 Tony Awards on Sunday, June 16, to present SufsShain Taub’s musical for which the former US senator and secretary of state is credited as a co-producer.

“What a great night. I’ve been on many stages now, but this is very special. And I know a little bit about how hard it is to make a change, so I’m extremely proud of this original American musical by Shaina Taub — now a two-time Tony winner,” she said. Clinton as she received a standing ovation as she took the stage at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater in New York City.

“And of course, we are talking about some American originals: the suffragettes who fought bravely for so long for women in our country to get the right to vote,” she said. “It’s almost impossible to imagine what a challenge it was, but now it’s an election year and we need to remind ourselves how important it is to vote, so please welcome us to society Sufs!”

Sufs received six nominations at the 77th Tony Awards, with composer Taub, 36, winning for best book of a musical and best original score. The production was nominated for best musical along with other nominees Hell’s kitchen, Illinois, Outsiders and Water for elephants.

The musical takes place in 1913 and follows the suffragettes who organize to ensure that American women gain the right to vote, which was granted to them when Congress passed the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution in 1920. , these brilliant flawed women entertain and inspire us with the story of their hard-won victory in a battle that still continues,” reads the musical’s official synopsis. “So much has changed since the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment more than a century ago, yet they remind us that sometimes we have to look back in order to fearlessly march into the future.”
