Serial adaptation of the 1998 novel Holes Louis Sachar was ordered to pilot, according to Diversity and Entertainment Weekly. However, the potential series will be designed to follow a female lead rather than a male one.
Diversitywho first reported the news, states that the logline for the series reads: “A teenage girl is sent to a detention camp where a ruthless warden forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose.”
Disney+ and Walden Media did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Alina Mankin, who previously worked at The Mindy Project and Anne with Ewill reportedly serve as writer and executive producer; and Liz Phang, whose credits include Yellow vests and Foundation, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Daredevil creator Drew Goddard will also executive produce, as will Sarah Esberg, Mike Medavoy and Andrea Massaro.
Walden Media, which produced the original film, will return for the pilot. However, it is not clear if any of the actors from the film will star in the series.

The book was previously adapted into a 2003 film starring Shia LaBeouf, Khleo Thomas, Sigourney Weaver, Jon Voight, Patricia Arquette and Eartha Kitt. The dramedy grossed over $16,300,000 in its opening weekend, finishing second at the box office, according to Box Office Mojo.
Sachar’s book follows Stanley Yelnats as he is sent to Camp Green Lake, a detention center for boys, after being wrongfully convicted of theft. There, he and a group of boys are tasked with digging precise holes every day under the supervision of a strict manager. As the story continues, Stanley learns more about his own past and develops a close friendship with his fellow prisoners.

The book was presented at Time magazinelist of the 100 best books for young adults of all time, and the publisher describes it as “a page-turning story of suspense, friendship, love and adventure that offers a nuanced consideration of injustice and imprisonment.”

The pilot order follows the revival of Disney+ Wizards of Waverly Placee last year, with several original cast members including Selena Gomez and David Henrie returning Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. Recently, the streamer announced four episodes Malcolm in the middle revival, starring series veterans Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek.
