They said he was taken to hospital with injuries “consistent with contact with high voltage”.

An investigation has been launched, but the tragic case has now been handed over to local authorities, the police added.

The hotel, known locally as the “Pink Hotel”, has confirmed it is temporarily closed while an investigation is carried out.

A spokesman said: “We are deeply saddened by this recent incident involving a child who was shocked on Sunday evening in our reception lounge.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the child and their family at this difficult time.

“We want to assure everyone that the health and safety of our guests and team remains our number one priority.

“We made the decision to voluntarily temporarily close while we conduct our own inspections.

“Our phone lines remain open and we are working very closely with Blackpool Council and the local police to assist with their investigation.”
