China “inhuman” executed four Canadian nationals on charges of drug smuggling earlier this year, it was discovered.
All four were dual citizens, the Canadian Foreign Minister said, adding that Ottawa requires indulgence for other Canadians facing the same terrible fate.

Melanie Joly told reporters: “There are four Canadians who are executed and therefore strongly condemn what happened.”
Joly added that all four were convicted of drug charges.
The Canadian Foreign Ministry also revealed that Robert Schellenberg, a Canadian man sentenced to death in 2019 for alleged drug smuggling, was spared with execution.
Mr. Schellenberg has always declared his innocence, insisting that he came to China as a “tourist”.
At the time of his judgment, experts said that Schellenberg was used as a political councilor in a greater quarrel between China, Canada and the USA.
The links between the countries have been icy since 2018 when the Chinese telecommunication director of Huawei, Meng Wanzhou, was detained in Vancouver at Washington’s request.
Shortly thereafter, China arrested two Canadians in what seemed to be revenge.
Meng and the Canadian duo were released in 2021.
China said on Thursday that she acted “in accordance with the law” and suggested that the Canadians were convicted of criminal offenses of narcotics, saying that “the fight against drug crimes is a common responsibility of all countries.”
“China is a country under the rule of law,” said a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mao Ning.

She added that Beijing “treats the defendants of different nationalities equally without discrimination” and “acts with cases strict in accordance with the law”.
China also “protects the legitimate rights of the parties in question, as well as the Consular Rights of the Canadian Side, in accordance with the law,” says Mao.
Canadian Joly said she and former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asked China for indulgence.
China classifies the statistics of the death penalty as a state secret, although groups for rights believe that thousands of people are afraid of the country every year.
Beijing said that this week the former Chinese engineer was recently sentenced to death for leaving state secrets aside by force.

Mao added that China treats the accused equally regardless of nationality, resolving their cases fairly and strictly, while keeping his rights.
In a statement, the Chinese Embassy in Ottawa said that Canada provides irresponsible remarks.
Without a confirmation that the executions occurred, she said: “China has always pronounced serious penalties for drug crimes and maintains the” zero tolerance tolerance “according to drug problem.”
