House of the Dragon Season 2 Finale Brings the Prequel Series Full Circle with a Game of Thrones Connection

Warning: This post contains spoilers for the season 2 finale The house of the dragon.

Season 2 finale The house of the dragon held several long-awaited meetings, a Game of Thrones full circle moment and set up an even bloodier season 3 to come.

The latest episode opened with Jason Lannister (Jefferson Hall) in Essos working to purchase their fleet of ships to sail on behalf of King Aegon. Meanwhile, Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) and Vhagar were busy burning the entire city – later revealed to be Sharp Point – to ashes in a rage after learning that Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) had successfully found three new dragon riders for the remaining dragons in Dragonstone.

In King’s Landing, Larys (Matthew Needham) informed the still bedridden Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) that his brother was “thwarted and angry” at Rhaenyra’s success and was coming for him. Larys said they had to leave the Red Keep and the city entirely, while Aegon asked, “Then what was the bloody purpose of all this?”

Larys’s logic was that Aegon should flee with him to Braavos and return after Rhaenyra and Aemond destroyed each other. “Aegon the Realm’s Delight,” the king decided he would be called.

Tensions were high in Dragonstone. Jacaerys (Harry Collett) was frustrated that three ordinary people had become dragon riders, especially when Ulf (Tom Bennett) was repeatedly disrespectful and rude despite Hugh’s (Keiran Bew) attempts to warn him otherwise.

While Jace was putting the new dragon riders in their place, Rhaenyra was with the Sea Serpent (Steve Toussaint), who advised her to use her advantage while she had it and fly into battle. Then, in a sweet moment, he told her that he had renamed his fleet in honor of his late wife, from “The Sea Serpent” to “The Queen That Never Was.”

After weeks in Harrenhal, at least partially driven mad and with fans questioning his loyalty, Daemon’s shining moment finally came.

When Sir Alfred Broome (Jamie Kenna) suggested that Daemon (Matt Smith) turn the armies he had gathered to fight in his own name – not the Queen’s – Daemon turned him down, despite the fact that he once would have jumped at the idea.

As the Blacks continued to amass an impressive army, Aemond grew increasingly nervous in King’s Landing – so much so that he turned to his sister Helaena (Phia Saban) and tried to get her to ride her dragon Dreamfyre into battle, but Alicent (Olivia Cooke) stepped in. She chased her son away, accusing him of trying to “corrupt” Helaena, whom she called “the gentlest and most deserving [his] protection.”

Alicent then sought the help of the Grand Master, while Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) confessed to Gwayne Hightower (Freddie Fox) that he was ready to die on his sword in the battles that threatened him.

Rhaenyra’s patience was tested as Ulf once again acted regardless of the gravity of his new role as dragon rider during a tense dinner at Dragonstone, where she then received word from Ser Simon Strong (Simon Russell Beale) warning her of Daemon’s potential betrayal.

She, along with Addam (Clinton Liberty), flew to Harrenhal to see Daemon’s progress in person. When she arrived, he knelt before her in front of hundreds of assembled soldiers and proclaimed her the one true queen for all to hear. The moment came only after Alys Rivers (Gayle Rankin) showed him an incredible vision – one that told a story not only of The house of the dragonbut from Game of Thrones yourself.

In a vision—which Helaena was also a part of—Daemon learned of his destiny and finally understood his greater purpose: to bring Rhaenyra to the Iron Throne, but also to understand all the “darkness and doom” that was yet to come.

The sequence alone was enough to give anyone goosebumps Game of Thrones fans, as Daemon jumped through time – guided by a three-eyed raven – and saw the White Walkers, the end of dragons and the rise of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) more than 200 years into the future. However, the vision ended with Rhaenyra sitting on the Iron Throne, so Daemon knew what he had yet to do.

“It’s all a story and you’re just one part of it. You know your role. You know what you have to do,” Helaena told him when the vision ended.

When Rheanyra arrived at Harrenhal, he told her what he had seen, speaking in High Valyrian as he delivered a line so cinematic that fans never thought they would hear it The house of the dragon: “Winter is coming.”

Despite appearing in Daemon’s vision, Helaena was still in King’s Landing and then offered her second warning of the night, this time to her brother Aemond. When he once again asked her to ride his dragon into battle with him, she told him that she knew he had burned Aegon and let him fall by the Top’s resting place. But that’s not all, she also tells him how he will die (“swallowed in God’s eye and never to be seen again”) and that Aegon will once again sit on the Iron Throne as king.

The final episode ends with a surprise reunion, as Alicent comes to Rhaenyra at Dragonstone, offering her a way to win the war as she says she’ll practically leave the gates of the Red Keep unlocked for Rheanyra to dance through and take. Through tears, she also agrees to the condition she knows Rhaenyra must claim: Aegon’s head.

Despite the former best friends’ grand plans, as the episode draws to a close, it is revealed that Aegon has, in fact, heeded Larys’ warning. The two left the Red Keep and headed for Braavos, so whatever deal Alicent and Rhaenyra made, all bets were off.
