This is the latest optical illusion to sweep the web – and it’s a truly fiendish one

Appearing on Reddit, the tricky challenge centres on a black-and-white drawing of an elephant.

But people are being left baffled over how many legs the majestic beast has, since they all seem to merge into one another.

The optical illusion is believed to have first surfaced in the 1980s, but now it’s back with a vengeance to divide a whole new audience.

Some commenters reckon the elephant has the regulation four legs, while others think the answer may be five.

However, one viewer claims there’s a definitive answer to the picture puzzle, even though you’d never guess it at first glance.

According to the eagle-eyed observer, the elephant in the drawing has only ONE leg.

They wrote: “The only correct elephant leg in the drawing is the back left leg. That leg is completely intact, but the others aren’t.

“If you look very closely, you’ll see that the rest of the legs have the foot missing from them. Basically, the artist chopped the feet off of the legs and put the images of the feet between the actual legs.

“Look closely at the image and you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about.”

The baffling image comes after we shared the image of a coral reef with a hidden creature lurking in it.

The incredible picture was taken on the iconic Great Barrier Reef and has been chosen as the Editor’s Pick in the BMC Ecology Image Competition 2017.

It was captured by Greek-born photographer Michelle Achlatis, a PhD student at the Coral Reef Ecosystems Lab at the University of Queensland.
