Weeks after announcing she was distancing herself from the country music industry, Maren Morris spent the day at the genre’s biggest awards show out in New York.
Morris, 33, was not in Nashville for the 2023 CMA Awards on Wednesday, instead spending the time attending various events in Manhattan.
Earlier in the day, the “My Church” singer — who said in September that she feels “very, very distant” from country music and its politics — stopped by a SiriusXM press event in a red, long-sleeved, cutout dress. She was then photographed leaving later in the evening Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen in jeans, a green top and a long black leather jacket.
The Grammy winner shared an Instagram post of some of the highlights of her trip to New York, including various photos of a sexy red dress, dinner at famous hotspot Carbone, and a photo with country singers Mickey Guyton and Brittney Spencer, who joined her for a performance at Tonight’s show Tuesday.

The trio performed “The Tree,” which is featured on Morris’ latest EP the bridgealong with “Get the Hell Out of Here.”
In conversation with Tonight’s show host Jimmy Fallon, the singer explained her decision to put the brakes on her country music career. (She said first Los Angeles Times in September that she thought she wanted to “burn [country] to the ground and start all over again,” but I felt that he was “burning out on his own without my help”).
“I just felt like I was leaving some things behind in country music that didn’t serve me anymore,” she explained. “And so it felt like a calling [the EP] the bridge it felt like a stepping stone to the next thing, whatever that might be.”
Morris continued, explaining that headlines saying she was leaving country music were “very hyperbolic,” because there will always be a part of her that will be country.

“I don’t think it’s something you can really let go of, because it’s the music that’s inside of me, and it’s what I grew up listening to. It’s the music that I write, even though I’ve been genre-fluctuating my whole career. You can’t erase country music.” , she said. “I carry the good parts with me and everyone is welcome. There were some aspects I wasn’t really having fun with anymore. I’m much happier now.”
In his interview for LA TimesMorris explained that she has faced challenges in advocating for her progressive beliefs, such as supporting the LGBTQ+ community, taking a stand for the Black Lives Matter movement, and criticizing people like Jason Aldean’s wife Brittany for making transphobic comments.
Meanwhile, Morris kicked off her trip to New York on Monday with an intimate fan club performance at the Bowery Ballroom, during which she told the audience she was going through “the weirdest year of my life.”
The star – who filed for divorce from husband Ryan Hurd in October after five years of marriage – said she was “going through some s—” and thanked fans for “leaning on you too much” while she performed.
