The Bisharp evolutionary line has gained a third and final form in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, with players now able to evolve Bisharp into Kingambit. Players will encounter many powerful pocket monsters on their journey through the Paldea region, and Kingambit makes for a solid addition to player rosters thanks to its dual Dark/Steel typing. This unique combination of types, found in no other Pokémon species, gives Kingambit a host of type resistances and immunities that make it a formidable opponent for other Trainers to face. However, in order to add this powerful Pokémon to their teams, players will need to follow a specific and highly unique method to evolve Bisharp.
The reveal of Pokémon’s 1000th pocket creature is a significant milestone for the series, but at their core, the games have remained much the same since their very first iterations were released. As the series moved to newer consoles, allowing for new features such as weather, a proper day-night cycle, and a calendar, players would find that they would have to use increasingly elaborate methods to evolve newly introduced Pokémon. To evolve Bisharp into Kingambit, players will need to engage in Pokémon battles. While many Pokémon still evolve by battling and leveling up, the process of evolving Bisharp is substantially different and unique.

Unlike newly introduced Pokémon such as Lechonk, Bisharp has a three-stage evolutionary line, starting with the Dark/Steel-type Pawniard. According to Serebii, Pawniard can be caught in Paldea’s East Province Area Three, North Province Area Two, South Province Area Five, and the Inlet Grotto. Players can then evolve Pawniard into Bisharp by reaching Level 52. To evolve Bisharp into Kingambit, players need to give their Bisharp a Leader’s Crest item and then battle three wild Bisharp that also hold Leader’s Crests. Leveling up will then trigger Bisharp’s evolution into Kingambit. Leader’s Crests are dropped by Bisharp, which can be seen leading packs of Pawniard in the wild, so players should keep an eye out for these roving packs of Pokémon.
Unlike Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s Smoliv line, players need to get Pawniard to a high level to evolve it into its second evolutionary form. To make getting Kingambit easier, players can actually catch and add a wild Bisharp to their teams. Players should avoid Fire, Fighting, or Ground-type moves when trying to catch Bisharp, as these types are super-effective against this species. Alternatively, players can take advantage of the games’ XP Share feature, which is now permanently on.
Bisharp’s appearance in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet accurately mirrors its Pokédex entry, which describes it as being “accompanied by a large retinue of Pawniard.” Given its battle-hardened nature and high level, players will likely have made good progress along Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s three storylines by the time they manage to add Kingambit to their teams. However, with a tough road to the Pokémon League and battles against Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s villainous Team Star and Titan Pokémon, players might like to work to get Kingambit on their side.
