Spotify is a versatile audio streaming service that allows listeners to use one device to control playback on another device, so it can be difficult to keep track of which gadgets are currently logged into the account, or whether others have access to the account. There are a variety of Spotify Premium plans to choose from, some of which allow other users to access certain benefits simultaneously as long as they live under the same roof. Otherwise, individuals will need to have their own Spotify account to have unimpeded access to its extensive catalog.
On many platforms, users concerned about others using their personal accounts can easily find this through the account settings page, which lists all the devices used to access the account. Unfortunately, Spotify does not currently have such a page. However, Spotify mobile app users may receive push notifications when their Spotify account is used elsewhere. They may also receive occasional emails from Spotify about new login activity to help keep their account secure.
Detect suspicious Spotify account activity
Users who prefer to use the app on multiple devices can seamlessly switch from one device to another using Spotify Connect. Spotify users currently using the service can also take advantage of this feature to find out if their account may have been accessed elsewhere at the same time. To check Spotify’s desktop or web app while a track is playing, click the Spotify Connect icon in the lower right corner of the screen to see all currently connected devices.
To check on mobile, launch the Spotify app, tap Settings (gear icon) and go toequipment.’ under ‘Connect to device,’ beat ‘Device menu‘ button. The device currently used to play Spotify tracks should be listed at the top. Other devices that can connect (usually devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network) will also appear in the list. If the list contains an unrecognized device, someone might be exploiting your Spotify account.
There are other indirect ways for Spotify users to determine if someone else is using their account. For example, they can check their listening history on the platform to see if any unusual songs have been played recently. If a Spotify user is currently listening to a song and suddenly switches to a new song without any explanation, this may also indicate that the same account is playing the track on different devices.
Block others from accessing your Spotify account
If users want to make sure they don’t stay signed into their Spotify account on a device they don’t normally use, they can visit their account overview page and click “Log out everywhere‘ at the bottom. Please note that Spotify users will need to enter their username and password again to access the platform on their preferred listening device. This is an easy workaround when a user logs into their account on someone else’s device. However, users will have to take more drastic measures if they suspect someone has used their Spotify login credentials to access their accounts.
After logging out of Spotify everywhere, users should reset their password. To do this, open Spotify’s password reset page in a private or private browser window. Enter the email address associated with your Spotify account and choose a strong password. After resetting your password, other users will not be able to access their Spotify account using their old credentials.
Users should also check which third-party applications have access to their accounts. To do this, open Spotify on your web browser, click on your profile in the upper right corner and select “account‘ and then ‘application‘ in the sidebar. Revoke access to any unknown or unused apps. Once completed, log back into Spotify on all trusted devices and access from unknown users should be revoked.
