Have you ever wondered if you could schedule a text message on your phone, much like you can schedule an email or social media post? The answer is yes, but the process is quite different depending on whether you have an Android or Apple phone. Continue reading to learn more.

  • On Android, long press the send button to select the date and time you want to schedule the SMS.
  • iOS doesn’t have text scheduling, but you can use the Shortcuts app as a workaround.
  • You can also download third-party apps to help you schedule messages on your iPhone or iPad.
  1. Step 1 Compose your text in the Messages app.

In order to schedule an SMS, you must have Android 7 or higher and be connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data at the scheduled sending time. If you are not connected, a message will be sent as soon as you have service again.[1]

  2. Touch and hold Send button. A menu under the title will appear Shipping schedule.

  3. Select the date and time for which you want to schedule the text. You can select one of the options on the menu or you can tap Select a date and time to choose your own date and time.

  4. Touch Send button. Your text will be sent when the scheduled date and time arrives.

    • When you open a conversation with a scheduled text, you’ll get a notification that the message is scheduled.
    • To edit a scheduled message, tap Schedule button next to the text. You can then change the content of the message, send the message immediately, or delete the message.
  1. Step 1 Open the Shortcuts app.

iOS doesn’t currently have a built-in text scheduling feature, but you can use the Shortcuts app as a workaround.

    • If you have iOS 13 or later, shortcuts are automatically installed on your phone. If you’re on an iOS version older than 13, you can download the Shortcuts app from the App Store.
  2. Touch Automation tab at the bottom of the screen. The tab is located between Shortcuts and Gallery and has a clock icon on it.

  3. Touch New automation. If you’ve already created some automations, you won’t see this button. Tap instead + in the upper right corner.

  4. Touch Time of day and enter when you want to send your message. To create an automation for a scheduled message, you need to choose:

    • Time of day: Set this for the time you want your message to be sent.
    • Per month: Set this for the date you want your message to be sent.
    • Run now: This will trigger your automation as soon as the scheduled date and time arrives.

      • Touch Following to continue to the next screen.
  5. Touch Send a message. It is located at the top, next to Start an empty automation. If you don’t see this option, you can search for “Send Message” in the search bar and then select it.

  6. Tap the word Message and enter your message. This instructs the automation what message to send when the scheduled time arrives.

  7. Tap the word Recipients and enter who you are sending the message to. You can select one or more people to whom you want to send this text.

  8. Touch Done in the upper right corner. Shortcuts will send your message on the scheduled date and time. If you want to edit your message before sending, go back to your automation in the Shortcuts app and change things as needed.

    • Note that this workaround creates an automation that will send a scheduled message once a month on the date and time you entered. If you only want to send the message once, be sure to go to Shortcuts and disable automation after the message is sent.
  1. Step 1 Open the Reminders app.

If you have iOS 13 or later, you can use the Reminders app to remind yourself to send an SMS. It doesn’t send the text for you, but it does create a reminder so you remember to send the text later.

  2. Touch + New reminder button. It is located in the lower left corner of your screen.

  3. Write your reminder. Give the reminder a title so you know who you should send the message to. You can even write the body of your text in the “notes” section of the reminder so you don’t have to do it later.

  4. Set the date and time for the reminder. You can do this by clicking on “I” button next to the reminder.

  5. Send a text when your phone sends a reminder. If you’ve written text in your reminder’s notes, you can send it directly from the Reminders app by doing the following:

    • Open the reminder.
    • Highlight the content of the note.
    • Touch Share button that appears in the context menu.
    • Touch Messages and select a contact.
    • Touch Send when you are ready to send the message.
  1. Step 1 Moxy Messenger.

Moxy Messenger is a messaging app that lets you schedule not only SMS and iMessages, but also messages in WhatsApp, Slack, Facebook Messenger, GroupMe, and even email.

    • Note that some features of Moxy Messenger are only available if you subscribe to Moxy Plus for $4.99 per month (or by purchasing Moxy Lifetime, a one-time purchase of $99.99).
    • Moxy Messenger is available for iPhone.
  2. Reminder database. Reminderbase is a message reminder app for small businesses or retailers, but you can also use it to schedule SMS messages. Unlike Moxy Messenger, it can only send email and text messages (10 of each per month for the free plan).

    • You can subscribe to Reminderbase for anywhere from $2.99 per month to $13.99 per month, depending on the plan you choose, if you need to send more messages or want to include MMS.
    • Reminderbase is available for iPhone and iPad and on the web.
  3. Step 3 Sending messages via mobile operator.

Carrier Messaging is a simple application for scheduling messages. It can only schedule text messages, but it’s easy to use and can sync with your contacts to make the process of scheduling messages easier.

    • With Carrier Messaging you can schedule a limited number of messages per month for free. If you want to receive unlimited messages, there is a one-time professional upgrade fee of $9.99.
    • Carrier messaging is available on iPhone and iPad.
