How Wish ‘Embraces’ Disney’s Legacy While ‘Looking Towards the Future’ (Exclusive Video)

Desire pays tribute to 100 years of Disney animated films.

A new musical comedy starring Ariana DeBose and Chris Pine with original songs by Julia Michaels hits theaters as the Walt Disney Company celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.

In a behind-the-scenes video shared exclusively with PEOPLE, the cast and crew explain how Desire it pays homage to the Disney classics that came before while paving the way for future films.

Co-director Chris Buck says, “We’re starting over Desire, we pinned a photo from every single film we made to the board. You could see the breadth of all the Disney animated films.”

He adds: “It’s a dream come true to be able to celebrate the studio and make a film that really embraces our heritage but also looks to the future.”

“And this concept of daring to wish upon a star,” says co-writer Jennifer Lee, “that resonated with all of us.”

Desire also co-directed by Fawn Veerasunthorn. The voice cast also includes Alan Tudyk, Angelique Cabral, Victor Garber, Natasha Rothwell, Jennifer Kumiyama, Evan Peters, Harvey Guillén, Ramy Youssef, Niko Vargas, Jon Rudnitsky and Della Saba.

“This film celebrates 100 years of Disney animation and it’s so special to me,” Oscar winner DeBose says in the clip, adding, “When I first heard the music for this film I was so moved. Every song tells this story in a way that’s so dynamic .”

Set in the magical kingdom of Rosas, Asha (DeBose), a “sharp-minded idealist,” makes a wish that’s “so powerful it’s filled with a cosmic force — a little ball of boundless energy called a Star,” according to the synopsis.
