Hugh Weibgen began playing cricket for The Valley at the age of eight. He worked his way up, playing first for the younger teams and then the older ones until he made it to the top team, the first-year boys. During this period Hugh also played in the Queensland Cricket League and won a starter’s contract with the Queensland Bulls. On January 22, 2024, at the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, Verbgen scored 39 runs not out after facing 43 balls against Namibia. On January 31, 2024, Verbgen performed well against England in the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup Super Six match. He scored a hundred to help Australia get off to a strong start in the Super Six tournament. On February 8, 2024, Australia defeated Pakistan in a very close match in the semi-finals of the Under-19 World Cup. They scored the 180 runs needed to win in the final stages of the game, while Pakistan scored 179 runs. After winning the semi-finals, he said in an interview,
