He worked his way up, playing first for the younger teams and then the older ones until he made it to the top team, the first-year boys. During this period Hugh also played in the Queensland Cricket League and won a starter’s contract with the Queensland Bulls. On January 22, 2024, at the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, Verbgen scored 39 runs not out after facing 43 balls against Namibia. On January 31, 2024, Verbgen performed well against England in the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup Super Six match. He scored a hundred to help Australia get off to a strong start in the Super Six tournament. On February 8, 2024, Australia defeated Pakistan in a very close match in the semi-finals of the Under-19 World Cup. They scored the 180 runs needed to win in the final stages of the game, while Pakistan scored 179 runs. After winning the semi-finals, he said in an interview,
