Overview of the 2023 Hugo Awards

The 81st World Science Fiction Convention, Chengdu Worldcon, has revealed the finalists for the highly anticipated 2023 Hugo Awards, as well as the Lodestar Award for Best Book for Young Adults and the Astounding Award for Best New Writer. The announcement was made on July 6, 2023 via Chengdu Worldcon’s social media and website. A total of 1,847 valid nominations were received from members of the 2022 and 2023 World Science Fiction Convention.

Final voting will open on July 10, and only Chengdu Worldcon members will have the privilege to cast their votes and determine the winners of the prestigious awards in 2023. Non-members have the option to purchase a membership on the Chengdu Worldcon website to participate in the voting process. The winners of the 2023 Hugo Awards, Lodestar Awards and Astounding Awards will be announced during a formal ceremony held on Saturday evening, October 21, 2023, at Chengdu Worldcon.

Hugo finalists 2023

The finalists for the 2023 Hugo Award span a variety of categories, showcasing exceptional works in the science fiction and fantasy genres. Some of the notable contenders include Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s “Dr. Moreau’s Daughter” and John Scalzi’s “Kaiju Preservation Society” for best novel, as well as Tamsyn Muir’s “Nona Ninth” and Mary Robinette Kowal’s “The Thrifty Man.” The best novella category includes works like “Even Though I Knew the End” by CL Polk and “A Mirror Mended” by Alix E. Harrow.

Works such as Catherynne M. Valenta’s “The Difference Between Love and Time” and John Chu’s “If You Find Yourself Speaking to God, Address God with the Formal You” were recognized in the best novella category. Several outstanding short stories were also nominated, including “DIY” by John Wiswell and “Zhurong on Mars” by Regina Kanyu Wang.

In addition, there are nominations for Best Series, Best Graphic Story or Comic, Best Connected Work, and Best Dramatic Presentation (both long and short), among others listed in the next section.
