I Have Three Closets Full of Clothes, but I Can’t Stop Wearing the Divisive Shorts Celebs Are Returning To

Some people like to collect the most sought-after makeup products, while others like to collect old records or sports memorabilia. Except me? It’s an outfit I can’t stop buying.

I have three overflowing closets, two full chests of drawers, a clothes rack on wheels, multiple under-bed containers, closet containers, and so many pairs of shoes I’ve lost count. But even with my mini department store, there’s one style I’m constantly reaching for: Bermuda shorts.

And before you completely give up on polarizing pants, know that I’m not alone—many celebrities are fans, too. Mindy Kaling recently shared a photo on Instagram in which she pointed out that she is wearing Bermuda shorts for the first time. She chose pants, similar to Kourtney Kardashian, while Jennifer Lawrence and Meghan Markle usually style more refined pairs.

I spend time in Illinois and Arizona in the spring and summer, which are wet and dry, so I need bottoms that fit both climates. I also dress quite modestly and don’t like short shorts or low waist styles. I don’t want to sweat profusely every time I leave the house, so it’s usually hard to find spring and summer styles.

But Bermuda shorts are it for me. They give me that breeze I need, but I don’t feel like my bum or legs are getting too much sun exposure. And in my opinion, they look classy and mature.

Like Kaling, I own Bermuda jorts. I have them in two colors, and my dark washed pair reminds me of these from Lee, which are available in sizes 4 to 18. They fit straight leg, so they don’t narrow and make your proportions look weird, while the looser eyelets for the legs also keep the breeze in for more airflow. Plus, the fit isn’t too baggy, so you’ll still be in shape. Get them while they’re on sale for just $21.

As for how to wear them, I wore mine with almost everything. If I’m at the lake or beach, I’ll pair shorts with a light blouse and some comfortable sandals. If it’s a dinner party I’m going to, I’ll swap out my shoes for little heels and add some bold jewelry to top it off.

I’ll go for a pair of high-style bermuda shorts for days when I want to dress like I’m walking around the city of Paris (rather than the suburbs). The Millie shorts from The Drop are pleated, a nice change from denim. The belt also has an elasticated back for comfort, and the fabric is 100 percent linen, so it should be nice on the cool side. And with the right button-up, it would be similar to when Meghan Markle matched her jacket with Bermuda shorts.

The basketball street shorts have large pockets for your phone, sunscreen and spring essentials, and look like they’d fall just shy of the knee.
