I tested supermarket steak pies – and budget buy for just £2.99 is as good as any pub’s

WHEN it comes to comfort food, it’s no wonder that 91 percent of us say pie crusts.

And with more wind and rain in the forecast this week, baking pastries and meat is the surest solution to a miserable night.

TESCO BEEF STROGANOFF PIE – £6.50, 271 calories per 100g

The TALL and sturdy creation gets top marks for pie to arm ratio.

However, go for it with a knife and fork and a nightmare begins to unfold as you try to get a piece of the action and the whole thing falls apart.

The puff pastry unfortunately dominates the pie and falls apart everywhere – but what’s left of it is delicious.

A light, creamy sauce made of white wine, cognac and mushrooms is a great combination with slow-cooked beef.

MARKS & SPENCER OUR BEST STEAK PIE EVER – £9, 269 calories per 100g

This Marks & Spencer pie really is their best ever

MARKS & Spencer wasn’t wrong when they labeled it “Our best steak pie ever”.

Cutting into this masterpiece, you will immediately smell the light aroma of slow-cooked, tender British beef with smoked bacon and a wonderful gravy. In terms of taste, this is hard to beat.

The crust tastes like buttery shortcrust pastry and the delicious juices are as good as an old French wine.

The steak is still tough, so be careful not to get it stuck in your teeth.

In the midst of this cost of living crisis I will have to deduct a point for its outrageous price.

CO-OP STEAK PIE – £2.50, 283 calories per 100g

This Co-op pie instantly stands out thanks to its golden frosting with browned edges

GOLDEN glaze with brown edges instantly sets the Co-op creation apart from the rest.

And as steam rises from the puff pastry lid, a perfectly sliced steak awaits underneath.

However, I found the sauce to be quite weak.

Kora was definitely his savior, combining all three elements in a beautiful way.

This is basically an oversized party pie, which isn’t a bad thing, but it certainly doesn’t stop the fun.

LIDL STEAK AND FAMILY PIE – £2.99, 288 calories per 100g

Lidl has made a classic steak pie

Throw in some veggies on the side and this meal will kill those Sunday pub lunches.

Lidl has nailed the classic steak pie, in my opinion.

It has nice chunks of beef inside and the sauce is full of onions.

The shortcrust pastry has a wonderful chalky texture and is easy to cut.

In terms of value for money, this family-sized pie would turn any frown upside down.

WAITROSE STEAK AND BEER PIE TOPPED WITH PUFFY PASTRY – £3,241 calories per 100g

This Waitrose pie boasts tender chuck steak braised in a rich Cornish ale sauce

The POSH supermarket went outside the box with this luxury invention.

It boasts a tender chuck steak braised in a rich Cornish ale sauce, which was certainly delicious.

The color of the dough was tempting and the strips of beef inside were delicious.

The flavor is unique, though, and you’d probably only want it in small doses.

This pie would be a hipster alternative in the category – stylish on the outside but irritating on the inside.

ALDI STEAK PIE WITH DEEP FILLING PASTRY – £1.69, 273 calories per 100g

You might feel the same way after tucking into this.

Filled with venison, it’s a pretty good standard.

While Aldi almost topped the charts when we tested the chicken pies last month, the chef clearly lost motivation with the beef.

When I bit, the cover popped off and forced me to pull one of the best catchers of all time, which was uncalled for.

The base is decent, but not enough to rise from the bottom of the rankings.

SAINSBURY’S STEAK AND PIE – £4, 273 calories per 100g

Sainsbury's steak pie is almost textbook.

IMAGINE a classic, humble pie and this is probably it.

If you can imagine walking into your home after a rainy day and the oven running with a lovely smell filling the kitchen, this would be the pie inside.

Sainsbury’s version is mostly textbook.

The rich, dark beer complements the steak perfectly, and the puff pastry lid is a buttery delight.

The only downside was the base, which required a bit of sawing to get through.
