Ian Hishop News

On Friday night’s episode of the popular BBC programme Have I Got News For You, regular panellist Ian Hislop criticised host Gary Neville for choosing to serve as a commentator at the World Cup in Qatar despite his criticisms of the Arab nation.

In the seventh episode of the most recent season, Neville was chosen to be the host. However, when the discussion turned to the World Cup, fellow panellist Richard Madeley was the first to poke fun at celebrities “going over there for huge cheques,” citing the likes of Robbie Williams and The Black Eyed Peas, who are going there to perform, and calling their decisions to do so “extraordinary.” Neville was also the target of Hislop’s ire.

But when Neville asked Hislop, “Ian, is it coming home?” to which Hislop responded, “What, your reputation?” to applause from the audience, Neville was soon to be the object of Hislop’s fury.

One of the channels Neville will work for is beIN Sports, which is controlled by the Qatari state and has come under heavy fire for its record on human rights. Despite these reservations, Neville will be covering the event for the broadcaster, so Hislop decided this was a good time to strike.

The squirming Neville was addressed, “The others have been really kind with you Gary, but the elephant in the room is still there – you’re commenting there, aren’t you? Hislop jumped in when the former Manchester United player said he was.

Well, you have a choice, don’t you, Neville said. My stance has always been that we should either speak out and draw attention to the problems and difficulties that these nations face, or else stay at home and avoid travelling altogether.

Hislop responded, “There is another choice; you stay at home and draw attention to the atrocities. It’s just not a very good defence, so you don’t have to go and take the Qataris’ money.
