Ian Ziering will always be in Shannen Doherty’s corner.
The Beverly Hills, 90210 actor, 59, praised his former co-star for her courage after she opened up about her stage 4 breast cancer in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE last month.
“Shannen has always been a fighter,” Ziering told PEOPLE at the 2023 iHeartRadio Jingle Ball in Los Angeles on Friday night. “It’s not over.”
“She has a long way to go. She is so brave and strong and a role model for those facing similar adversity,” he continued. “She’s really an amazing woman.”

Doherty previously revealed in her exclusive interview with PEOPLE that Ziering — along with Brian Austin-Green — are two of the cast members Beverly Hills, 90210 with whom she has really formed a bond over the past few years.
“I would say that of anyone in that lineup, Brian has been the one that has remained consistent in my life,” she said. “Brian and I never really lost touch with each other. We always applied. We always tried to see each other.”
She continued: “I think as Ian and I got older, we really started to appreciate each other in a very different way and we were able to sit down and talk about what we were both going through as individuals at the time. original 90210 days.”

“But when we were all in Canada filming the reboot… Yes, it was often the three musketeers. Me, Ian and Brian, we would just go to dinners together and hang out. It was pretty great,” she added.
Back in September, Green, 50, praised Doherty for her strength as she battled cancer, telling PEOPLE, “Shannen is loved and she should be.”

“She’s a fighter. She’s faced challenges over the last, oh my god, decade that are just hard things. And she absolutely leads by example and shows people that even in the toughest of times you can keep your head up and you can be a good person,” he added.
Doherty has been open about her cancer journey for years. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, which went into remission in 2017. But by 2019, the cancer returned — and she announced her diagnosis of stage 4 metastatic cancer the following year.

In June, Doherty said the cancer had spread to her brain. Then she posted a video on Instagram of herself undergoing radiation therapy.

In her November cover interview with PEOPLE, the actress revealed that the cancer had spread to her bones, but she was still receiving treatment and hoped to enter clinical trials at all as new treatments are developed to fight metastatic breast cancer.
“I’m not done with life. I’m not done with love. I’m not done creating. I’m not done hoping to change things for the better,” she said. “I’m just not — I’m not done.”
