Biography of Ilhan Omar

Ilhan Omar is Somali born in Mogadishu, Somalia and spent his childhood in Baidoa, Somalia. Her mother died when Omer was two years old, so she was raised by her father and grandfather. Omar and her family spent 4 years in the Dadaab refugee camp in Garissa County, Kenya to escape the war. They moved to New York, USA in 1992 and lived in Virginia for a while before moving to Minneapolis.

Career

Omar began his career as a nutrition educator at the University of Minnesota in the US. Ilhan always wanted to be a politician and make changes in the world. She ran for the Minnesota House of Representatives with a Democratic Farmer Labor (DFL) ticket in 2016 and won. Her term began on January 3, 2017, and she became the first Somali-American representative in the country.

Despite many controversies in her career, she has always excelled with her hard work and determination. She ran for the United States House of Representatives from Minnesota on June 5, 2018 and won, becoming the first woman of color to hold the position of United States Representative from Minnesota, and the first Muslim woman elected to Congress.

Following her election, several rules were changed in the US House of Representatives, such as a ban on headscarves and Omar was the first woman to wear a headscarf in the House of Representatives. Omar has supported a number of initiatives, including free higher education for low-income students and universal healthcare, and strongly opposed Donald Trump’s border wall plan, calling it “racist and sinful.” She even stood up for many countries and their human rights.
