YOU may have lived in “mom jeans” in the eighties and have your favorite Noughties ballet flats to thank for your buns.
But wearing such fashion pieces today reveals your age.
That’s according to TikTokers who, despite bringing back many styles from the nineties and twenties, mock others as outdated.
There are 90.2 million Gen Z v Millennial posts, with hot topics of discussion including the types of jeans women over 27 wear, the length of their socks and even how they tuck in their shirts.
Here, fashion editor and millennial Clemmie Fieldsend reveals how TikTokers pass judgment and what you’re wearing is apparently an instant sign of age.
Shoulder bag

Sarah Jessica Parker switched to a cross body bag
JUST a bag, right? wrong
The fashion politics of your arm candy is a complicated matter.
If, like us, you spent your youth cramming everything into a shoulder bag, chances are you’ve now switched to a crossbody bag, like Sarah Jessica Parker, 59.
Maybe you’re wearing a crossbody that sits next to your hip or higher.
The longer version indicates that you are Generation X or a Baby Boomer.
The taller one — dubbed the “millennial Birkin” by TikTokers — is said to be in her thirties or early forties.
The irony is that Gen Z – who only carry their phone and keys – now prefer the thin shoulder bags we loved in the 90s.
French tuck

In the early Noughties, the term “French tuck” was coined by male stylists on Queer Eye For The Straight Guy.
It referred to the Parisian way of having half your shirt tucked in and the other side and back out.
The 42-year-old Duchess of Sussex – a millennial – is a fan of this style.
But older generations prefer fully tucked in, as does Generation Z.
The secret of the Hollywood silhouette revealed!
“Gen Z vs Millennial Shirt Tuck” has 71.2 million posts, with younger people saying thirty-somethings should tuck everything in to show off their waists.
If you’re Gen X or a Boomer, congratulations on sticking to your vigilante pull.
You are in style!
Short denim jacket

DRESSING denim jacket over a floral midi dress and white sneakers combined with a leather Radley backpack can be your choice.
But it’s also declaring your age.
The standard short denim jacket with chest pockets, unusual slits or embellishments is out, according to Gen Zers.
That could be bad news for Amanda Holden, 53.
Instead, denim jackets are huge and come from an overpriced vintage store.
“Faded Leather Jacket” has garnered more than 450 million views on TikTok.
So dust off your oversized biker or denim jacket from the eighties or nineties instead.
Tracksuit sock

THERE are over 40 million posts on TikTok discussing what the coolest sock length is.
Gen Z says they should be visible, pulled up to mid-calf, and you get extra points if they’re worn over workout leggings.
If you wear any other type of socks, you can also walk with the Zimmer frame.
There’s no escaping it – no matter how much Botox you’ve received, slipping on the humble sneaker, also known as a no-show, will reveal your millennial identity, indicating that you were most likely born in the eighties – or earlier.
Mom’s jeans

The BIGGEST denim divider is mom jeans, named after mothers from the eighties.
Think of Rachel in Friends and Cindy Crawford.
While the tapered ankle style made a resurgence in the 2010s and was spotted on style-conscious models like Kendall Jenner, 20-somethings on TikTok aren’t impressed when us older folks wear the style.
They say it’s a big fashion red flag and that we should opt for wide-leg or barrel-leg jeans.
To talk

FROM sixties rocker Danny Zuko in Grease to Alexa Chung and Rihanna in the Noughties, Converse All Stars have been a staple shoe for decades.
Sneakers were first designed in 1922.
But Generation Z would not see them as dead.
If you stick to yours, you’re certainly not in your twenties.
These days, trending sneakers include chunky “daddy” styles and colorful designs from top brands Nike, New Balance and Adidas.
Another indicator of age is burying the laces in your shoes instead of simply tying them.
Celebrated trends are a Gen Z no-no
Mini-skirt

MARY QUANT forever changed the way women dress in 1958, when she created the miniskirt.
But if you wear it today, it’s probably an outdated style.
That is unless it’s a micro-skirt, with a hem that covers the crotch, because that’s the length Gen Z prefers.
With a strong Noughties skelt (skirt belt) influence, the micro-mini is taking over TikTok.
If you like to wear the more modest miniskirt, a few inches above the knee, which was popular in the 90s on celebrities like Melanie Sykes, now 53, you’ll look lovely – but you can also walk around looking your age. on your forehead.

Half a century has passed since designer Diane Von Furstenberg invented the wrap dress.
And it has certainly stood the test of time, with Madonna, Princess of Wales and Michelle Obama, 60, embracing the style.
However, Generation Z has finally called time on the look, so you won’t find a 20-something wearing one on a night out in your town.
On social networks, you will see only women over 30 years old.
Yes, they flatter the waist, bust and stomach, but according to TikTok, they’re not cool.
Generation Z prefers cottagecore, the kind of milkmaid-style dresses that are suitable for whimsical strolls through sunlit meadows.
