DEAR DEIDRE: I KNOW I’ll be sitting alone on Christmas Day with my two cats for company while my boyfriend does God knows what.
We have been together for two years and he works up north most of the time. I live in the south. He owns a business that sells cheap household products and says he has to travel for supplies.
He then moves it to a car boot sale or sells it to small shops.
He visits me once a month, I cook him a meal and we have sex, but he never wants to know about me.
He never wants to talk to me. In fact, the only time I really have his attention is the five minutes he takes me to bed for some passion.
When he stays, he has an Xbox with me, so he’s either on it or on his phone.
I’m 34 and he’s 39.
I saw some heart emoticons that appeared in someone’s message and then I found some condoms in his laundry bag, but we never use them. I know he still talks to his ex-wife. They have two children together.
He told me he stays at the flat when he’s up in Scotland or Newcastle, but often declines my calls. The Find My Friends app won’t let me see where he is.
I asked him if I could be with him for Christmas this year, but he said, “No love. I am a busy man.”
Do they think I’m a fool?
DEIDRE SAYS: Even if this man isn’t cheating, ask yourself what exactly he’s bringing to the party.
It sounds like you’re asking for a commitment, not a monthly loot call. Can this man offer you that?
I see someone taking advantage of your gracious hospitality and picking you up and leaving as they please.
Don’t take this as a rejection of you. It sounds like he’s a commitment phobe with his own issues, probably with another woman he’s also cheating on.
This is destructive, dead-end, no-strings-attached sex that will only leave you feeling used.
Tell him casual is not right for you. You want a full connection. If he has serious feelings for you, he’ll soon be looking for more. If not, move on.
My support package called Your Lover Not Free will help you realize that you deserve better.
