Ina Garten Gives a Tour of the ‘Coziest Room’ in Her New York City Apartment — See Inside!

Ina Garten opens the door to one of her favorite rooms in her New York apartment!

The Barefoot Contessa star, 76, detailed some design elements in her Upper East Side home during an interview with The house is beautifulDigital cover from October 2024. According to the media, the space is the “jewel” of her two-bedroom apartment, which she bought with her husband Jeffrey Garten in 2016.

“It’s the most comfortable room in the house,” says Ina about her library, where she often relaxes after dinner.

She notes that the path to choosing the perfect color for the walls was not easy, although in the end she reached the perfect shade of purple. Star of The Food Network — whose new memoir Be ready when luck strikes out Oct. 1 — reveals that she searched through “100 to 200 purples” to find just the right shade for the room.

“When I’m choosing a color, it’s like a thousand swatches,” she adds. “I chose this one because I wanted a gray purple that had life in it.”

Ina has taken on more than a dozen renovation projects—from her home in the Hamptons to an apartment in Paris—and loves to tackle even the most challenging remodels.

“I’m an adrenaline junkie,” she says. “I’m giving myself a project that I don’t think I’ll be able to pull off.” And then I’m going to do it. And when it was done, I mean, it turned out really well. I love having impossible problems to solve. I like the challenge of trying to come up with something.”

The celebrity chef worked with designer Daniel Romualdez to furnish the space to her taste. While the furniture in Ina’s library once graced the living room of her former New York apartment, Romualdez says it looks “much better” reimagined in this room.

“It was really dramatically different,” he said of the furniture in the new space. He also noted their excitement when they saw how each piece played with the colors of the book’s binding.

About working with Ina on designing the space, Romualdez says that “she is the best.” He continues: “She’s a bit of a design fanatic. So she comes to the table knowing what she wants, and at the same time she’s extremely open to ideas that aren’t necessarily her own.”

In addition to decorating her current Upper East Side abode, Ina told the outlet that she worked on another unique space just for her husband while he was living in Japan. He says she turned his Tokyo home into an “exact replica” of their New York apartment at the time.

“Jeffrey moved every year when he was a kid,” she explains. “He hates moving, and I love building things, so we kind of had this unspoken agreement that I could build whatever I wanted and I could make whatever decision I wanted – but I know what he likes. I just get his clothes and his toothbrush and move him in and he shows up and it’s done.”

During a September cover interview with PEOPLE, Ina opened up about her 55-year marriage to Jeffrey and how the couple managed to get through a rough patch when they separated and almost divorced in the 1970s.

She discovered that she needed her husband to see her as his equal and as if they had a partnership in marriage, so she asked him to see a therapist.

“One hour, that’s all it took for Jeffrey,” she told PEOPLE of the action that saved their marriage. “He went once for an hour and got the hang of it.”
