Her mother, Esther Luella Sherman, was an American and changed her name to Ragini Devi after marrying into a Hindu culture. Her parents immigrated to India in the 1920s, and her father became an assistant editor of Young India magazine and later India’s general counsel in New York and chairman of the Indo-American Alliance. Her mother took a keen interest in learning Indian dance forms and became the most recognized dancer of the 1930s.

Indrani Rahman started her dance career from the classical dance discipline of Bharata Natyam. In the 1940s, Guru Chokkalingam Pillai taught her the Pandanallur form of Bharata Natyam. She started learning Kuchipudi from Korada Narasimha Rao when she was in Vijayawada city. Later, in 1947, she was attracted by Dr. Charles Fabbri, India’s top dance and art critic, who urged her to master the classical dance genre Odissi. Indrani studied Odissi dance for three years under the tutelage of Guru Sri Deba Prasad Das, becoming the first professional dancer to do so. She continues to perform Odissi dance in India and around the world, helping to popularize this classical dance form.
In 1976, she joined the dance department at the Juilliard School of Music at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York, taught at many universities in the United States, including Harvard University, and toured extensively in the United States over the next two decades.

After marrying and becoming a mother, Indrani went on to compete in the 1952 Femina Miss India beauty pageant. She was the first woman to win the Miss India beauty pageant. She later competed in the 1952 Miss Universe pageant in Long Beach, California. Her swimsuit look paired with Bindi and Gajeel left the audience in awe.
