Inside Keke Palmer and Darius Jackson’s Struggles: ‘Las Vegas Was Beginning of the End,’ Says Source (Exclusive)

The news that Keke Palmer was granted a temporary restraining order against ex-boyfriend Darius Jackson, as well as sole custody of their 8-month-old son Leodis, was shocking, a source familiar with their relationship tells PEOPLE.

The Not the actress (30) filed a restraining order against Jackson (29) on Thursday in Los Angeles due to domestic violence. Palmer has asked the court for full physical and legal custody of Leodis, citing multiple allegations of physical abuse in the filing, according to documents reviewed by PEOPLE.

“It’s a big surprise,” says the source, who claims Jackson and Palmer publicly appeared friendly late last month during an event in Los Angeles for her streaming network KeyTV. “The baby was there, everyone. Darius went to support her, everyone congratulated her.”

However, the insider admits that there have been problems in their relationship in the past. The couple, who reportedly met in 2021 while attending a Memorial Day party hosted by Issa Rae and Diddy, have hit it off over the years, according to a source.

“There was at least one breakup, before the Vegas incident,” the source says, referring to the public drama that unfolded last July after Palmer visited Usher’s Vegas residence, where she was serenaded by the upcoming Super Bowl halftime performer.

Then Jackson publicly called her out for her combination citing the tweet shows a video of Palmer dancing with Usher and writes, “It’s the clothes… you’re the mom.”

A source says: “I don’t think the Vegas incident is the cause of all this. There were problems before, but I think that was the beginning of the end.”

After Jackson’s embarrassing announcement, fans were quick to come to Palmer’s defense. “There was some genuine love,” says the source, who claims: “Things were really good around Leo’s birth.”

“I have my own personal boundaries for what I feel I want out there,” she said, “or what I want to give people a chance to talk about,” she said.

This week, in response to Palmer’s urgent request, a Los Angeles County judge ordered that Jackson stay at least 100 yards from the actress and their son, as well as any childcare or education set up for the newborn.

In addition to awarding Palmer temporary sole physical and legal custody of Leo, documents obtained by PEOPLE show that Jackson is not allowed visitation with his son, and a hearing is set for Dec. 5 to determine how to proceed with the arrangement.
