Inside the Japanese Restaurant Frequented by Meghan Markle, Joaquin Phoenix and More Stars

There are tons of sushi restaurants in Los Angeles, but Asanebo Japanese Gourmet has celebrities coming back time and time again.

The hot spot has garnered a loyal following since opening in 1991, including Hollywood and British royalty. On Thursday, Meghan Markle joined a friend for dinner at a favorite sushi spot in Los Angeles.

The restaurant, which received Michelin stars in 2008 and 2009, attracts guests with its simple interior design and extensive menu. The hot spot is led by chef-owner Tetsuya Nakaohas and offers omakase options or a la carte selections, including various preparations of Wagyu beef, classic maki and a rotating selection of the day’s catch of sashimi.

During Thursday’s appearance, Markle and Terry Wood, executive producer of Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Productions and executive producer of Markle’s podcast Archetypesthey dined at a corner table in a Studio City restaurant.

“Meghan was lovely” during the evening, a source told PEOPLE of her visit, adding that she was in great spirits and ordered plenty of sake.

Lady Gaga and Beyoncé also visited the Japanese venue, according to a source. Not only is Joaquin Phoenix another regular, but he’s also a “great tipper,” the source adds.

Its global appeal makes it even more enticing for A-Listers. According to Asanebo Japanese Gourmet’s Instagram, his selection of fresh fish comes from domestic and international sources from places like Spain, New Zealand, Australia and Japan.

Asanebo is over 30 years old and was a karaoke bar during its early years. Now the intimate restaurant opens its doors at 5 p.m. and closes at 10 p.m., seven days a week.
