International Day Against Poverty: History

The International Day against Poverty has been observed since October 17, 1987. On that day, more than one hundred thousand people gathered at the Trocadero in Paris. In 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed at the Trocadero in Paris in honor of the victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger. It was decided that poverty is a violation of human rights and the need to come together to ensure respect for these rights was confirmed. Since then, people from all walks of life are coming forward and gathering here on October 17 to renew their commitment and show their solidarity with the poor.

On December 22, 1992, the General Assembly adopted resolution 47/196 and declared October 17 as the International Day for the Fight against Poverty. All countries and people are invited to promote this day and undertake various activities to eradicate poverty and destitution.

It is necessary to eradicate poverty everywhere in all its forms. According to the World Bank, poverty is an income of less than 1.90 dollars a day. Also, we cannot ignore the fact that poverty is more than a lack of money. The goal of the Sustainable Development Agenda until 2030 is poverty. One number one goal is to eradicate poverty in all its forms and everywhere.
