On July 12, 2022, Ioma Rajapaksa and her husband Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country amid violent protests triggered by the economic crisis. Many sources claim that the couple fled the country on board an Antonov An-32 aircraft of the Sri Lanka Air Force, heading to the Maldives. The couple traveled from the Maldives to Singapore and from there to Thailand. In August 2022, many reports stated that Ioma and Gotabaya might return to Sri Lanka in the first week of September as they had only been granted 90-day Thai visas. Media also reported that another reason for their return could be that the money required to live in an expensive place like Thailand is unsustainable and surrounded by 24/7 VVIP security.
