A YOUNG mother of four “starved to death” more than 18 months after gastric bypass surgery in Turkey last year.
Shannon Meenan-Browse, from Derry, died on August 25 aged 32.

She went to Turkey for a weight loss procedure in February 2022.
After the surgery, Shannon couldn’t eat without getting sick and couldn’t digest the medication.
Her teeth began to rot and she began to lose her hair.
She was diagnosed with malnutrition, which led to multiple organ failure.
The Creggan woman was awaiting a life-saving liver transplant but was too weak to be flown to London.
Shannon ended up in intensive care and died at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry.
Speaking at Shannon’s funeral this week, father Daniel McFaul said Shannon was “a magnet in every company”.
He said: “She drew people to her with her smile and her crackling laugh which was contagious.
“She loved people, always ready for anything, whether at home or on the road. She was life and soul, she had a listening ear and a caring heart.”
Her family and husband are appealing for people to understand the risks of weight loss surgery.
Her parents Shane and Kathleen also tragically lost their son Brian in July.
Her devastated brother Connaith said more awareness was needed about the dangers of weight loss surgery.
He said: “I can understand why a lot of people think going to Turkey to get that sleeve will be a useful thing, and for some of the lucky ones it is.
“Unfortunately, my family suffered because of the circumstances when things went the other way.”
The brother warned that weight loss surgery is a “gamble”.
Connaith said: “We live in a society that teaches people that body image is important or something you should attach self-worth to.
“In 2023. is and that is no longer the case.
“We come in different shapes and sizes for a reason and they’re all great. You are amazing in every shape and form.
“If you’re in a position to think about that operation, you’re gambling and the gambler doesn’t always win.
“My sister paid with her life and she won’t be the last.”
Shannon’s husband Don also said his wife’s death was “soul-destroying” for the family.
He told Belfast Live: “She was more or less starving the whole way.”
Don continued, “Noodle water was all she ate.
“She had cramps and pain, she vomited so much that her teeth rotted from the acid in her stomach.
– She was completely exhausted and started losing all her hair.
