KCCI
KCCI, also known as Channel 8, is a well-established television station located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. It is affiliated with the CBS network and owned by Hearst Television. The station’s studios are located on Ninth Street in downtown Des Moines, while its transmitter is located in Alleman.
KCCI has a strong local presence, producing 29½ hours of news each week. This includes 4½ hours each weekday, three hours on Saturdays and four hours on Sundays. Over the years, KCCI has built a loyal following, making it the highest-rated station in Des Moines for most of its history. Its roots in the Register contributed to its success, often surpassing the combined ratings of competitors WHO-TV and WOI-TV.
Despite its dominance, KCCI has faced challenges in the past, notably during the review period in February 2010 when it temporarily lost its morning and 6pm news lead to the WHO. Additionally, in the May 2011 previews, KCCI lost the top spot at 5:00 PM but maintained a narrow lead at 10:00 PM. However, the station made a strong recovery in July 2013, winning every time slot and increasing its lead over WHO in various segments.
KCCI was a pioneer in adopting new technology and broadcasting standards. It was the first station in Des Moines to broadcast local news in 16:9 widescreen on April 20, 2009. Although other major stations followed suit with high-definition local newscasts, KCCI’s broadcasts remained in enhanced definition wide format until April 26, 2011, when it upgraded to high definition for its 5 p.m. newscast.
