Hulu History

The establishment of Hulu involved the collaboration of several key individuals, including Bruce Campbell, Peter Chernin, JB Perrette, Mike Lang, Beth Comstock, George Kliavkoff, Darren Feher, and Jason Kilar. In March 2007, Hulu was announced as a joint venture involving AOL, NBC Universal (then co-owned by General Electric and Vivendi), MSN, Myspace, and Yahoo! They were intended to be the “initial distribution partners” for the platform.

Jason Kilar assumed the role of Hulu CEO towards the end of 2007.The name “Hulu” was selected in August 2007, when the website went live with a preliminary announcement, lacking any actual content. Users were invited to provide their email addresses for participation in the upcoming beta testing. In October 2007, Hulu initiated private beta testing through invitation-only access, and later allowed users to invite their friends to join.

Finally, on March 12, 2008, Hulu was launched for public access in the United States. The first product to be launched was the HULU Syndication network, which was developed by the NBC Universal team from New York under the leadership of Tom Sharma. This was followed by the introduction of the Hulu.com destinations site.

Hulu embarked on an advertising campaign during the broadcast of Super Bowl XLIII on NBC, featuring an initial ad starring Alec Baldwin titled “Alec in Huluwood.” Subsequent advertisements showcased personalities such as Eliza Dushku, Seth MacFarlane, Denis Leary, and Will Arnett.

In July 2007, Providence Equity, the owner of Newport Television, became an early external investor in Hulu by acquiring a 10 percent stake in the company for a $100 million equity investment. This occurred before the company was officially known as “Hulu.”

Providence Equity also secured a seat on the board of directors, allowing them to provide an “independent voice on the board.” In April 2009, The Walt Disney Company joined the Hulu consortium as a stakeholder, with plans to contribute content from ABC, ESPN, and Disney Channel to the platform.
