After being a staple of children’s television for almost six decades, fate Sesame Street is in the air.
In December 2024. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Warner Bros. Discovery has not renewed its contract to help finance the production or broadcast of new episodes Sesame Street on its streaming platform, Max. According to the exit, Max – which it was Sesame Streethas been home since 2016 — is changing its programming strategy to focus on adult and family content.
“It was a wonderful, creative experience to work with everyone in Sesame Street on the iconic children’s series and we’re thrilled to keep some of the library series on Max in the US,” a spokesperson for the streaming service told the publication.
Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch and Cookie Monster first debuted on the small screen in 1969. Every year since Sesame Street characters have found new and fun ways to educate young children about everything from letters and numbers to practicing good hygiene and healthy eating.
The 55th season of the beloved children’s show will premiere on Max in January 2025 as planned, and the streaming platform will continue to offer the choice Sesame Street libraries until 2027. However, beyond that, Sesame Streetthe future remains unclear.

It is not clear if they will Sesame Street it will end after 55 years. The show’s producer, Sesame Workshop, has yet to sign a new programming deal with another streaming service after Max decided not to renew his contract with the show.
However, the spokesman seems convinced The Hollywood Reporter that Big Bird and his friends have a bright future.
“We will continue to invest in our best-in-class programming and look forward to announcing our new distribution plans in the coming months, ensuring that Sesame Street reaches as many children as possible for generations to come,” said a spokesperson for Sesame Workshop.
Back in October 2023, the outlet also reported that viewers would see a “reimagined” Sesame Street starting with season 56. The completely new format will feature an animated series, Stories from 123with two story segments of 11 minutes.

Max did not renew the contract with Sesame Street in an effort to direct their resources toward programs for adults and families, such as the upcoming one Harry Potter series.
According to a spokesperson for the streaming service, the new strategy is “based on consumer usage and feedback,” per The Hollywood Reporter.
“However, as we launched Max and based on usage and consumer feedback, we had to prioritize our focus on stories for adults and families, including new episodes from Sesame Streetat this time, they are not at the heart of our strategy,” the spokesperson explained.

Part of Sesame Street The library will be available to watch on Max until 2027. Currently, the streaming service only offers seasons 1, 5, 7, and 39–54. A few selected episodes Sesame Street are also available on PBS Kids.
The streaming platform’s decision to end its partnership with Sesame Workshop will not affect the January 2025 premiere of Season 55 on Max.
