It took Mitchell Miller 6 years to apologize to the family of Isaiah Meyer Crothers
Joni Meyer Crothers was furious when the Coyotes drafted Miller. No NHL team has contacted her in their background checks on Miller, she said.
A letter she considered writing to all teams before the draft — she never sent it, she said, believing Miller would not be drafted — was distilled into a sharp message sent directly to the Coyotes in the days after the draft. (They didn’t answer, she said.)
“Hello – I am the mother of a boy who was bullied by Mitchell Miller. I have read the statements made by CM (Bill Armstrong) etc. and I find them humiliating for our son. Are you aware that Mitchell NEVER apologized to our son? Are you aware that he was still mocking him for two years? Are you aware that this has been going on for years? Do you understand the mental damage Mitchell did to our son?
I respect that you said you were going to send an apology to all the NHL teams, but wouldn’t it make sense if he was truly remorseful and sent a letter to the kid he brutally abused both mentally and physically. Is it any surprise that he sent all the NHL teams a letter because this was for his betterment?
I guess as an organization and an NHL team I would expect a lot more and push them to a higher standard, especially with the (Black Lives Matter) movement. As much as we pray that Mitchell will eventually see the damage he has done to our son, we have seen no remorse. The other gentleman sincerely apologized to our son and the son forgave him. The judge said it best: “Mitchell, I don’t think you’re sorry for what you’ve done more than you’re upset about the negative attention you’re getting.
Again, a bully incident that has continued for years has significantly damaged our son psychologically and your organization is more concerned about Mitchell and your success in hockey. In my opinion, that’s part of the problem. There is also the victim of success. it was and still is in the hands of your 111th pick.
The best, Joni
Joni Meyer told NBC10 Boston on November 4, 2022.
“Miller told our son that his black mom and dad didn’t love him, that’s why he had white parents,” Joni Meyer-Crothers said. “It’s called the N-word on a daily basis. [Miller] asked Isaiah to sit with him on the bus, and as soon as Isaiah sat with him, he and his friends would just headbutt Isaiah non-stop, and all he wanted were friends. So he was an easy target for Mitchell.”
Miller and another teenager were charged with forcing Isaiah to eat the candy after he wiped it on a bathroom urinal. Surveillance camera footage showed him being kicked and punched. Joni said Mitchell Miller apologized to Isaiah via Snapchat.
Miller said,
“When I was in the eighth grade, I made an extremely bad decision and behaved very immaturely,” he said. “I bullied one of my classmates. I deeply regret the incident and have apologized to the person. After the incident, I better understood the far-reaching consequences of my actions that I failed to recognize and understand almost seven years ago. I strive to be a better person and contribute positively to society.”
