The sister-in-law of late American Airlines flight attendant Diane Ramos was “shocked” by her death and was unaware of it until Friday, she told PEOPLE a day after authorities positively identified Ramos.
Diana was found with a sock stuffed in her mouth in a Philadelphia hotel room Monday night, PEOPLE previously reported. Her death is being investigated by the Homicide Unit.
“I’m shocked that something like this could happen to her,” said Helen Alaniz, sister of Ramos’ late husband, Raymond Ramos. “It’s just amazing, because she seemed sweet.”

Alaniz says her brother Raymond and Diana mostly kept to themselves, but they lived in the same state as Alaniz.
“They kept quite a low profile,” she says. “Because of her schedule and flying, she wasn’t always available.”

Alaniz said she hadn’t heard from Diana since Raymond’s death in 2021 and it worried her.

“Since my brother died, we haven’t received anything from her after that,” says Alaniz. “I would call her phone number and leave her [a] message, because I wanted to hear what he was going to do, was he going to stay there or move somewhere else?”
“I just have no idea how this could have happened to her,” she says, adding that it’s been a difficult month because September marks the death of her brother, both parents and now Ramos.
